Submitting your Medical School Application: What you need to prepare

Applying to medical school takes time and patience. It’s not something you should rush, and it’s a process you should spend some time preparing for ahead of any deadlines.

If you want to study at your medical school of choice, you need to put the time and effort into preparing your documents and filling out the required information. Not supplying all the necessary documents, and not demonstrating that you have the experience and qualifications to be accepted can hinder your application.

At MSIH, you can submit your medical school application online beginning July 25th. This article explains what you need to know and prepare before you are ready to hit send.

Personal details and demographic data

In the first part of your application, you’ll need to provide your personal information. While this is normally the most straightforward part of the application, you need to be sure not to make a mistake or spelling error, as this can lead to misinformation appearing on your university documents.

The information you need to provide includes:

  • Full name
  • Address
  • Last 4 digits of SSN or National Identity Number
  • Date of birth
  • Phone number
  • Citizenship information, including passport details

Academic record

You also need to provide a full academic history of all the education you will have completed by the time that you are planning to start medical school. Be prepared to provide full official transcripts of your grades from each institution you have attended, as well as a list of all the courses you have studied that are relevant to your medical school education.

It’s important to check that the courses you are taking –– or have taken –– meet entry requirements. If you have any gaps in your education, you need to explain the circumstances surrounding these.

You’ll also need to submit test results from the MCAT, UCAT, or GAMSAT. For the latest information on these tests, please reference our admissions page.

Essays and supporting documents

Applying to medical school requires more than just strong academics; you also need to submit a full CV detailing your relevant previous experiences. This will help our admissions committee learn more about you and see that you are fully committed to the hard work that lies ahead. You will also have to complete two essays which include a biographical sketch, as well as details of a challenge you have faced.

The final part of the medical school application process involves providing a pre-med committee letter. If your school doesn’t have a pre-med committee, then you will be required to provide at least three letters of recommendation, at least two of which must be academic in nature.

Be Ready

Prepare to apply beginning July 25th. This includes developing and refining your CV, reaching out to your advisor and referees, and having transcripts sent. If you haven’t taken the MCAT yet, now is the time to register and study.
