Medical School Graduation Celebrates 27 New Global Health Physicians

May saw the graduation of the Medical School for International Health Class of 2019. Twenty-seven new physicians joined the ranks of the select few doctors who are specially-trained to work in the Global Health arena.

Altogether, in its 21 years of operation, MSIH has graduated 597 MDs, many of whom are making their contribution to medicine in low-income settings where their skills are most needed.

Guest Speaker: Prof. Sharon Nachman

The keynote speaker this year was Prof. Sharon Nachman, Chief of Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and Director of the Office of Clinical Trials at Stony Brook University. Prof Nachman enthralled the audience with her life story, explaining how she became the leader of the International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPACT) Network. During her work with the Network, she was instrumental in discovering that taking a three-drug regimen during pregnancy prevents mother-to-child HIV transmission more effectively than taking a single drug during pregnancy, another during labor, and two more after giving birth.

The Gold Humanism Honor Society

Four new doctors were inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society at the Medical School Graduation Ceremony.

Awarded to medical students and physicians who demonstrate a strong commitment to service, the graduates were selected by MSIH faculty and their peers for their work in global health and their commitment to humanism.

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s goal is to create the “Gold Standard” in healthcare – compassionate, collaborative and scientifically excellent care – to support clinicians throughout their careers, so the humanistic passion that motivates them at the beginning of their education is sustained throughout their practice.

The Foundation works with healthcare professionals to ensure that compassion, respect and empathy are at the core of their healthcare interactions. More than 130 top medical schools are members of the Foundation – with a handful outside North America. One Chapter of the Foundation is MSIH.

This year’s inductees were:

MSIH is incredibly proud of our graduates and excited to see their future impact on the world!
