What makes a Global Health Medical School Education Unique?

Today’s society is more globalized and connected than ever before. With increased access to the far reaches of the globe and increased migration, there is a growing need for physicians to understand new cultures and treat diseases they might have never before encountered. Training in a global health medical school can help doctors succeed in the field when they are faced with these emerging challenges.

With the changing healthcare scene, the topics covered in global health are growing in popularity. Medical students are driving this seachange, as they understand that the health of people everywhere is of growing concern to us all. Learning about and training in global health is so important for the physicians of today –– and tomorrow.

A unique perspective

The Medical School for International Health understands the reality our world faces today, and the need for future physicians to grasp a more holistic image of our health system. Our M.D program is unique in that it incorporates global health components into all four years of study.

A global health medical school education prepares you for work you’ll do in a variety of settings, from hospitals and private clinics to healthcare organizations, academia, and NGOs. The aim is to give all students a comprehensive understanding of health around the world, wherever they decide to practice.

You’ll learn the skills to treat patients, and at the same time, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the social, environmental, cultural, and economic factors that impact the health –– and healthcare systems –– of people across the world. This gives you a unique perspective on specific treatments, as well as healthcare in general.

In a global health medical school, students learn about relevant issues. These include tropical diseases, health inequities, challenges surrounding aging, refugee health, urban health for underserved populations, and HIV/AIDS in the modern-day.

Hands-on experience

Throughout your education, you’ll gain hands-on experience working with underserved populations and diverse communities across the globe. You will also get the opportunity to study other subjects alongside the core medicine components, such as medical ethics.

You’ll be better prepared as a physician as you tune into the issues facing local cultures and populations. You will also study alongside other students who are committed to working towards equality in health care access and better treatments that are tailored to the needs of diverse communities.

MSIH students and alumni are from diverse backgrounds and different walks of life. However, many of them serve in underserved environments. whether it be in low-income settings, urban populations or in rural areas that have insufficient access to medical care.

Overall, the unique medical school education at MSIH will allow you to make a lasting impact as a physician. You’ll contribute to improve society as a whole and help ensure better health for your patients. When you complete your degree, you’ll be more than just a white coat.
